Grading Setup


“The process of applying standardized measurements of varying levels of achievement in a course”


Grades are used to identify the results students have obtained in their courses. The mark (grade) (0-100) is recorded within the Enrollment records (Course connection object) either manually or through an integration from an LMS system. This system will then search for the relevant grade setting by using the grade entered to group within a grade range and record the:

  • Grade Value  (e.g. High Distinctions)
  • Grade Points (e.g. 7)
  • Grade Result (Pass/Fail)
Setting up grading

RIO University applies a standard grading system for a majority of courses. This will be set up in the system as the default grading system. Alternate grading systems can also be set up to accommodate certain courses which were evaluated differently

You can define a different grading system for different programs in RIO Education. The grades will be applied to the Students results associated with the respective Program. The system will take then take the lowest level record it finds (e.g Academic program, then Department, then Institution). This allows for a flexible grading system when a default grading scheme at an Institution level can be set, but also overwritten for a particular Program.

Grades can be defined at the following level:

  • Educational Institution – this means all the results are graded based on the default grade settings available at the Educational Institution level.
  • University Department – this means the results are graded based on the default grade settings available at the University Department level.
  • Academic Program – this means the results are graded based on the default grade settings available at the Academic Program level.

In this example, we will setup the grading system for the Master of Leadership program


1. Go into Program Master of Leadership

2. Go to the related list. In the Grade related list, click New

3. Create a Grade Setting named “MOL-HD” with the following value:

  • Grade Setting Scope: Academic Program
  • Grade Range: 90-100
  • Grade Value: HD – High Distinction
  • Grade Points: 7.0
  • Grade Result: Pass

Example of the end result:

Repeat the steps above to define the rest of the Grades with different values and parameters.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL is an assessment process that involves assessment of an individual’s relevant prior learning to determine the credit outcomes of an individual application for credit.

RPL is important for two primary reasons:

  1. Course completions and prerequisites. Admin can credit RPL and it counts towards the course completion and the prerequisites.
  2. Govt Reporting: There is a whole range of reporting requirements in FEE Help


An Admin can mark a course as prior learning by selecting in the Course Connection Result area of the student’s Course Connection:

Grade Result = RPL

Enrollment Status = Completed

Release Grades = True



An RPL grade value will be considered as Pass grade and will not impact the student’s overall GPA.

An RPL credit counts as if the course has been completed and counts towards the completion progress the same way a completed course would.
